DAYTON–The wife of an area hunter was selected for a prize bull elk tag; a chance to hunt the big one; something that is more unlikely than winning it big on the slot machines in Vegas. But it happened to Tri-Cities resident Brandy Sloot,. "I'm still feeling completely and totally blessed to have harvested such an amazing creature," exclaimed Sloot. "People spend many years hoping to get drawn for this prestigious tag. I only had 11 points earned when I got the results of being selected. My h...

Next Sunday we will "fall back" to Standard time, add an extra hour of slumber for most and lose the advantage of a bit more light during winter afternoons. Daylight Saving Time, which has been a part of American life since the days of Benjamin Franklin, had its latest modifications as a result of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. In 1987, the "spring forward" was changed from the last Sunday in April to the first, and it is now in early March. It was extended to ten months of the year during the...
DAYTON–Columbia County is experiencing an exaggerated number of COVID cases (35) locally and is considered a community spread right now, but they are not linked together. Columbia County Public Health Administrator Martha Lanman said this is a true community spread and it is very contagious. It is not confirmed as of yet if the virus being experienced here is the Delta Variant because results from tests submitted to the State have not returned, but according to Lanman, the virus acts in that c...
This editorial has been prompted by a letter to the editor recently submitted expressing gratitude for the efforts of some in trying to protect the community from a devastating fire here as well as around the country, a fire that has burned people out of their property or homes. This has become the scenario over the past few years where fire traumatizes the Pacific Northwest each summer due to, in my opinion, poor forest management by agencies in charge of overseeing the vast forested, government–owned land. Logging ceased in the late 1980s, g...

DAYTON–Del and Adena Avery were married May 8, 1971 on Mother's Day. It was to be an easy day to remember because it was Mother's Day that year. "We were married on Mother's Day of 1971, thinking it would help Del to remember the date," Adena reflected. "Our thinking was incorrect because the Mother's Day date does not stay the same every year." During their many years together, the two owned a local tavern on main street Dayton and one in Richland, Wash., too. They also shared their time w...
As you may have already read, the House Democrats passed H.R. 1 with little opposition, paving the way for Senate approval, where, if passed, it will transfer election authority to the federal government, where there is no oversight. Just this change in policy will open the door to attacks on individuals for their political views, silencing any opposition to any issue. Who does this benefit? Not the “people” of the United States. It gives government the power to manipulate and query election protocols at anytime for the purpose of swinging a v...

Bailey made the Quilts of Valor given to veterans John Eaton, Army, and Chet Powers, US Navy WWII. Demaris constructed the Quilt of Valor bestowed to Air Force veteran Duane Lowe. Both Bailey and Demaris ceremoniously presented each quilt to these honorees....
I was reading through the obituary of life-long Dayton citizen Nadine Warren and was thoroughly impressed with how involved she was during her life. She was a farm wife. She had a career. She went to Kinman Business University and was a secretary. But she was involved in so many clubs. It seems like, for our parents and the early part of my generation, our twenties and thirties, there were groups we could be involved in, somewhere to interact with other people building meaningful relationships and be a part of the community. This type of camara...

The Quilt of Valor Foundation began in 2003 by Catherine Roberts as a dream. It was literally a dream. "A dream of a young man sitting on the...

DAYTON–Twenty-twenty has been an experience the world has shared together, and will certainly be one to remember through all time. For the Baker family, we have experienced three immediate-family funerals within a three-month period, beginning with our daughter Whitney in August, our favorite Uncle Mike in September, and recently, our beloved sister-in-law, Patty, in October. We have survived and are learning to live without our loved ones. Now we turn and face our next challenge: cancer. Loyal will be undergoing an out-patient surgical p...

Please note Eaton announced there may be a danger of a road closure if the culvert on Coates Creek on Wolf Fork Road washes out during spring runoff. There are no scheduled closures for that area at this time....
After viewing “social dilemma,” a Netflix documentary, I was enlightened to what is taking place in the social-media platforms and how they are influencing–even manipulating–our very ideas and courses of action. A few early Silicon Valley developers have come forward to lay out the ideas behind Facebook, Twitter, Snap Chat, You Tube and other social-media platforms, saying they were initially developed to connect family and friends, far and near, quicker and easier. But the initially beneficial and well-meaning purposes of apps like Faceboo...
