Elizabeth Gibson's "Outlaw Tales of Washington" (available at Dingle's of Dayton) includes a chapter "The Great Nude Bathing Case." It's about little Home, Washington, a Pierce County settlement near Van Geldern Cove, now populated with get-away beach homes. But in 1897, three men bought 26 acres for $7 an acre on terms: $20 down and money raised by digging clams and selling timber. The three men, George Allen, O. A. Verity and F. F. Odell, established the Mutual Home Colony Association, an...

I confess to not owning a tractor. I have plenty of friends nearby with tractors. But in a lapse of good judgment I borrowed one to brush hog a patch of weeds. Experienced farmers, even an 8 year-old farm kid knows that you always drive a tractor thumbs up. I didn’t remember. As I was farming around I managed to hit a post with the front wheel. The steering wheel spun like a helicopter blade and jammed my protruding thumb! It swelled up so big it wouldn’t fit through the neck of a quart jar...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jan 2, 2020

To the editor, Life in these United States–2019. We sit in our comfortable living rooms or dens, watching TV. We read the sports pages and enjoy drinking and partying at tailgate parties. We overeat and try to lose weight by buying weight-watcher’s subscriptions and enrolling in well-equipped gyms. We drive our gas-guzzling SUV’s from one store to another to shop. We love to call, text and search on our smart phones. Wow. What a hard life we have. In the meantime, our country, supported by our tax dollars, has rounded up over 70,000 child...

  • Library News

    Jan 2, 2020

By Sarah Reser Library Board of Trustees My middle son was a reluctant reader when he was younger, it was all I could do to get him to crack a book open. Even when the book was open, it was a fight to finish the book. That changed the summer after 2nd grade; he was so interested in history that I suggested we read Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand. I knew that it was way above his level, but the content was so appealing to him, I thought we would give it a try. It took us ALL summer to read the book; we stopped often to sound out words and talk...

I enjoyed the 2018 documentary film about Fred Rogers - “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” - so much that I was skeptical about bringing in the new film, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” starring Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks has played so many real-life characters (Captain Phillips and Captain Sully, to name two), that even he got tired of it. He sent out word through his managing agency that he would not look at any more scripts portraying real people. However, he had already met Director Marielle Heller, who got discovered at Sundance in 2012. So,...

    Jan 2, 2020

KENNEWICK–New polling released by Washington Policy Center shows Washingtonians are opposed to destroying the dams on the lower Snake River and are unwilling to pay higher electric rates in order to have them removed. The statewide poll of 500 Washington citizens conducted in late November and released December 17, 2019, also reveals what limited knowledge Washingtonians really have about the Snake River dams. Some of the polling highlights indicate: -Just 7% of Washingtonians knew there were four dams on the lower Snake River. -Just 5% of Wash...

  • Who Are They?

It may be hard to find good help, but at one point an unknown number of years ago, it wasn't that hard to find happy help. It appears this sunny-faced group were laboring in one of the local orchards, but where and when are question marks. This photo is among hundreds in the archives of the Historic Dayton Depot Society, published in cooperation with the Dayton Chronicle, in hope our readers might recognize the photographs and/or subjects in them....

  • Chilly first quarters spell losses for DW girls

    Loyal Baker|Jan 2, 2020

MILTON-FREEWATER–An offensive shoot out and a defensive battle characterized two Christmas Tournament games played by Dayton-Waitsburg here last weekend. The DW Girls dropped the Friday game against Irrigon 57-47, and were in the hunt against Stanfield in Saturday’s game, which was lost 38-30. Seven Lady D-Dubs were in the scorebook in the Irrigon game, led by 5-11 junior post Sadie Seney with 22 and 5-10 freshman guard Claudia Benavides with 10. MILTON-FREEWATER–Dayton-Waitsburg Head Coach Roy Ramirez is patiently waiting for his patients—correction: players—to all be healthy at the same time, to see how they might do on the basketball court. Never the less, the Dayton-Waitsburg boys have put in impressive showings, especially at a Mac-Hi sponsored Christmas Tournament here last weekend. DW faced Irrigon on Friday, losing 59-52, and then placed Stanfield Saturday, getting edged 53-52. “We’ve had a lot of kids out sick,” Ramirez said, pointing out that a December 20 league game agains...
