    Jan 9, 2020

DAYTON–A February 11 Special Election will seek voter approval of two levy measures by the Dayton School District. Vote-by-mail ballots will be posted on January 24 or before. The Dayton School District is seeking approval of an Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy and a Capital Technology & Facilities Levy, according to Superintendent Doug Johnson. The measures are not new taxes but will replace expiring levies approved by voters in 2016, and projections estimate a decrease in total t...

  • BOCC Chair Amerein hits the ground running

    J J Dippel|Jan 9, 2020

DAYTON–Charles Amerein, District No. 3 Commissioner on the Board of County Commissioners, hit the ground running as he took over as chair on January 6, 2020, replacing outgoing Chair Michael Talbot, District No. 2 Commissioner. When Commissioner Talbot was Chair, he sat in the center (with the other two Commissioners on either side) so the question was jokingly asked if they now have to switch places. It appears they decided to retain their same seat positions at the table, with Amerein at o...

  • Wolf sighted near golf course

    Loyal Baker|Jan 9, 2020

DAYTON–Residents should be aware of a daylight sighting of a grey wolf in the vicinity of the golf course recently. Golf course neighbors Paul and Marcene Hendrickson report having sighted a grey wolf on the Touchet River levee about two weeks ago. Paul Hendrickson said it was a large wolf, approximately equal in size to a deer, and it had a streak of color down its back. They have observed its tracks around the area. "It might be good to alert the rest of the neighborhood that there's a wolf n...

  • Remembering Christmases Past

    Jan 9, 2020

The joys of Christmas, still fresh in our memories as the new decade gets underway this month, are underscored by memories of time long past. This beautifully lighted tree has a story, related to the Chronicle by Edward "Bud" Smith of Dayton, and provides a touching coda to the Christmas season just behind us. It seems that Bud, years ago and when a small lad, overheard his parents discussing forgoing a Christmas tree that particular year. "Broken hearted, I walked outside with Dad and...

We made a quick trip to the wet side last weekend, slopping over Snoqualmie Pass and boring into the seemingly incessant misty rain of the Puget Sound area. Our destination was the Olympic Peninsula and we joined the masses ripping northbound on I-405 to catch one of several ways to extend Highway 104 across the briny deep. The frenetic-ness seems to begin permeating you as you angle downhill after cresting Snoqualmie’s 3,015-foot elevation and the relatively warmer climate dissipates the snow and slush into a shiny black pavement. For drivers...

  • Edge of Common Sense

    Baxter Black|Jan 9, 2020

McGraw posed an interesting question. If a cowboy herds a herd of cattle, we call him a herder. If a sheepman herds a flock of sheep, he’s still a herder. Why isn’t he called a flocker? Oley has always referred to himself as a cow disturber. I think that is an accurate description of what cowboys do. The definition of disturb is: to annoy or disrupt. “Where ya goin’, Bill?” “I’m gonna go check the cows.” Which really means, “I’m gonna ride into the bunch, git’em all up, turn’em around and ju...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jan 9, 2020

To the editor, The Dayton School District needs your support with the upcoming replacement levies. The State of Washington is committed to providing the costs of basic education. The local levies help to support the parts of public education that are not fully funded by the state allocation. Here are just a few of the many ways the levy funds are used: smaller class sizes, counselors and nurses, transportation for field trips and club activities, athletics, classroom supplies, CTE classes (Home Economics, Wood Shop, Ag Shop), Business...

  • At the Theater

    Mike Ferrians|Jan 9, 2020

It’s been a long time since I looked forward to seeing a race car movie like “Ford v Ferrari,” with Christian Bale and Matt Damon. I don’t usually pay attention to car racing anyway. Having a step-father who builds award-winning custom autos has threatened to change my style of late. I’ve grown in my appreciation for the double discipline involved in building special cars: art and engineering. I already knew about Carroll Shelby–the once chicken farmer turned car enthusiast who built a reputation for adding his own special touches to American...
