  • Clarifying cannabis

    Charlotte Baker|Jan 30, 2020

DAYTON–To expand and clarify on the “Commissioners address cannabis issues” article in the January 23, 2020, Dayton Chronicle, further explanation of some facts need to be defined. The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) was informed of on-line training for the potential hazards of applying code to cannabis facilities that Columbia County Associate Planner Dena Wood and Columbia County Building Inspector Clint Atteberry viewed. During the discussion, the commissioners were not invited to view the virtual training, but they did express inter...

    Jan 30, 2020

On stage at the Liberty Theater last weekend, the cast of "Foolish Fish Girls and the Pearl," kept audiences laughing in this fishy and feisty fairy, er, mermaid's tail, directed by Bev Startin. In this scene, Floyd Ferguson, played by Eric Sams, swoons at the thought of finding "happily ever after," with, from left, "deep-sea divas" Oceana (Kim Boggs) and Coral (Deb Fortner), Nathan (Mike Ferrians), Pearl (Audrey Bensel) and Sam (Fred Crowe)....

  • Hospital working on Assisted Living Project; Kime replaces Dyball

    J J Dippel|Jan 30, 2020

DAYTON–The Columbia County Health System (CCHS) is working on an Assisted Living project. The desire is Assisted Living, not an Adult Family Home. Assisted Living facilities are regulated by the State, Adult Family Homes are not, they are regulated by a third-party group. They have met with Blue Room Architecture, and are discussing a 16-20 resident project broken up into two adjacent "pods." The current tentative floor plan can be modified to accommodate two or more residents per unit and may i...

  • Did Dayton's Frank Finkel survive Custer's Last Stand?

    Jan 30, 2020

DAYTON–It is nearly time for Punxsutawney Phil (nationally renowned groundhog) to let the world know what to expect with the weather. If he sees his shadow on Ground Hog Day, the folklore prediction is that winter will last another 6 weeks. If Phil does not see his shadow, then spring should arrive early. Either way, the Blue Mountain Heritage Society (BMHS) believes it is a great time to celebrate the changing seasons and will hold its 12th Annual Ground Hog Dinner at the Columbia County F...

  • Guest Commentary

Jason Mercier, Director, Center for Government Reform, Washington Policy Center|Jan 30, 2020

Having written for the last several years about the scheme to impose a capital gains income tax, I often receive emails from citizens across the country trying to figure out what is going on in Washington. This is especially true considering the fact the state Department of Commerce runs a website boasting about the lack of an income tax in Washington and why it is a "competitive advantage." State Treasurer Davidson has also repeatedly stated why not having an income tax is positive for...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Jan 30, 2020

To the editor, I received an unexpected email over Christmas break from a former Dayton resident. Her father is in an assisted living home in Walla Walla and they picked up a Dayton Chronicle on their way through town. It just happened to be our Christmas edition, where one of my students asked Santa for books. Since this lady was a retired teacher (30 years in Spokane) and her father was the former Dayton High School Shop teacher many years ago (Mr. Gritman, now 96 years old!), she asked if she could be Santa’s helper and gift my student w...

  • Barrel Racer

    Jan 30, 2020

I’m a barrel racer from way back in the day. We’d all get together, grab three rusty old barrels, several garden rakes, step off the measurements, get a lawn chair, a stop watch and a flagger, and have a race. We’ve ran with the fences around the arena and some with none. It was a privilege to run indoors. We drove mainly bumper pulls, slept in the back of our trucks, brushed our teeth and washed our faces out of the same spigot we watered our horses from. We had to wait for the next newsletter to see our results. We called our entries in, r...

"The lights went out right in the middle of my match," Norris said this week. He had gotten up 5-0 in the first round and his opponent had scored three points when the match was called because of the outage that affected the Kittitas Valley. In the day's opening match, 138-lb.
