  • Potential forest fire nipped in the bud

    Loyal Baker|Jul 30, 2020

DAYTON–Damage in timber by a fire of as yet undetermined origin was limited thanks to a citizen's sharp eye and prompt response by local fire departments Monday. At about 10:50 a.m., Columbia County Dispatch received a call from a citizen who reported seeing smoke in the tree line south of Dayton. Fire District No. 3 units were dispatched and Chief Jeromy Phinney reached the area, where indeed a fire was getting underway. The fire was burning in some grass and brush, and was just moving into a...

"June was a return to near normal volumes, with the system falling short of budget by only $174,854, which can happen in any month, as things come back after the initial COVID response," said CEO Shane McGuire. Health District Controller Tom Meyers stated the financial report reflects improvements since the reopening at the C...

    Loyal Baker|Jul 30, 2020

DAYTON–As if celebrating her store's 100th anniversary this year wasn't enough, Dayton's Mindy Betzler walked in Elk Drug-just across Main Street from her store, Dingle's of Dayton–and was surprised to learn that the prescription she was there to pick up was Dayton's long-time pharmacy's One Millionth prescription received from a provider. Elk Drug's Sean Thurston presented Betzler with a gift basket of items from Elk Drug and a gift card from Skyline Parts of Dayton. "Isn't that a riot!" Bet...

  • Guest Commentary

    Lori Burns, Conservative Blogger|Jul 30, 2020

Many of us are turning off the news–despairing at the discouraging headlines. Months of horrifying headlines about COVID 19 and now civil unrest. I have tried to do the same, but have only succeeded in reducing my consumption, not turning it off completely. It is because I am insanely curious about what is going on around me, but my main motivator at present is my lack of trust, both in the media and in our political “leaders”. As Rahm Emanuel famously stated, “Never let a crisis go to waste.” Evil people are doing that very thing, today in...

  • On the Edge of Common Sense

    Baxter Black|Jul 30, 2020

The other day on the internet, I saw an old commercial of a semi truck that had these words painted on the side: JONNY KAT, KITTY LITTER. For some reason that had a profound ffect on me. Imagine a semi full of kitty litter! 40,000 pounds of scented, colored, and packaged cat box contents! That has to say something about our affluent society, about the shape of our civilization. Some of our past inventions are quite practical and ingenious. The self-sealing, puncture proof tire, mercury lights,...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Jul 30, 2020

To the editor, I am writing in support of Perry Dozier to be our next State Senator for the 16th Legislative District. This is my first ever letter to the editor. I served as the Clerk of the Board to the Board of Walla Walla County Commissioners for over 25 years. County Commissioners must be responsible, caring, knowledgeable, willing to listen and learn and make informed, sometimes hard, decisions on behalf of the citizens of the county. Perry was an excellent County Commissioner. He came into the position with considerable experience in...

  • Walla Walla Hospice helps local charities

  • Dayton Days horse races once captured the Touchet Valley's attention in a big way

    Loyal Baker|Jul 30, 2020

Long-time Chronicle reader Herb Bowen brought in a treasure recently-a 16-page magazine geared toward the Dayton Days horse races, published by the Dayton Chronicle in 1940 with the front-page ad for Lindon "Shelloney" Barnett trumpeting "!WAR!" Of course, with the United States' entry into World War II unknown at the time and some 19 months off, the ad-tongue in cheek-refers to the revolutionary characteristics of "New Tracrol Lubricant," sold by Shell Oil Agent Barnett to local farmers. On...
