To the editor, There is a group of citizens who are concerned about the impact of the proposed Touchet Valley Trail on Columbia County Citizens. We have approached and been approached by approximately 600 citizens who have signed a petition requesting that this issue that affects the property, livelihood and quality of life in our community be put on a ballot by the Port Commissioners. This will allow all the voting citizens of Columbia County to have a say in such an important matter that will continue to affect the County in years to come....
That they would find each other would have been as unlikely to predict as the fall of communism or the good sheep market. She was old and a lifelong Southern Baptist. They were young and on a mission for the Mormon Church. A requirement of good ‘Mormonism’ for young men is to serve as a missionary for the church for two years. They are expected to go door to door wherever they are sent and spread the gospel of the Latter Day Saints (LDS), also called Mormons. Now if you think that’s easy, put y...
By Skyler Rude, Walla Walla, R-16th OLYMPIA–In this technology-driven age, the Legislature needs to ensure accessibility and transparency in the legislative process. Access needs to be user friendly and available to everyone. Although a 130-year-old institution, the legislature must keep up with changing technology that enhances access. It is important that we make and honor that commitment to you. After driving back and forth from Walla Walla to Olympia for six years now for my official d...
Carol’s story is just another glamorous tale of a city girl who married a romantic Nebraska Sandhills rancher years ago and became a ‘vocational COW assistant’ for life. “So what exactly do you want me to do?” she asked. “Take the pickup (she didn’t learn to drive till she was twenty-nine) then go out there to the Big Pasture (the dreaded Big Pasture where one grass covered hill looks like the next one to her). Start way back there at the gate in the Middle Pasture where we have the heifers n...
To the editor, Libraries are filled with words. All along the shelves are bound series of words that tell stories of all kinds. Libraries have always been places where words are important even when a reader or a patron disagrees with those words. Libraries are supposed to be the last bastion of banning of words. They are the fortress against the silencing of voices. They allow all to be heard. Perhaps at one time that is what Dayton Memorial Library was like. But things have changed. The Board of Directors at CCRLD have decided that public...
Having written for the last several years about the scheme to impose a capital gains income tax, I often receive emails from citizens across the country trying to figure out what is going on in Washington. This is especially true considering the fact the state Department of Commerce runs a website boasting about the lack of an income tax in Washington and why it is a "competitive advantage." State Treasurer Davidson has also repeatedly stated why not having an income tax is positive for...
The rancher told his foreman, “Looks like things are gettin’ tough The price of calves is deadly, heck, there may not be enough To pay the note this winter, I’m already overdue What with buyin’ that new tractor, shoot, it wuddn’t even new ‘Course I’d bought the neighbor’s cow herd back when things were lookin’ good Then we had that bout with Anaplaz, which I never understood. We buckled down and rode it out but luck weren’t on our side. You’ve worked for me for twenty years, you know how h...
To the editor, I received an unexpected email over Christmas break from a former Dayton resident. Her father is in an assisted living home in Walla Walla and they picked up a Dayton Chronicle on their way through town. It just happened to be our Christmas edition, where one of my students asked Santa for books. Since this lady was a retired teacher (30 years in Spokane) and her father was the former Dayton High School Shop teacher many years ago (Mr. Gritman, now 96 years old!), she asked if she could be Santa’s helper and gift my student w...

No doubt most of you in the livestock business have a certain “family affection” for the fast food chains. Particularly those restaurants whose main attraction is the often disguised but still All American hamburger. It also is true that each of us has his own particular favorite. Organizations like the National Restaurant Association have attempted surveys to compare the merits of each burger. Readers, you will be pleased to know that the Coyote Cowboy Co. (me) has conducted its own sur...
To the editor We are urging you to continue your support of Dayton schools and students by voting “YES” for the upcoming Capital Projects and Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levies. Continuing these existing levies will help maintain programs not funded under “Basic Education” in the State of Washington. These programs are important to our students and community and continuing them will not increase taxes. In fact, taxpayers will find themselves paying LESS than they have been the past 4 years. Watch your mailbox for a flyer with de...
Raised several “amens” while watching president Donald J. Trump’s campaign rally in Milwaukee Tuesday. Trump spoke about jobs, the lowest unemployment rates for minorities in history, the soaring stock market, stronger stances in international trade that is reaping benefits in the United States, reinvigorated respect in the international community and, a conservative favorite, reduced government regulation and interference in our lives. At one point, Trump laughed that he was bothering to talk about sinks, showers, toilets, dishwashers, washi...
When beef gets short, a lot of cowboys are forced to do without. The cook must come up with meatless meals. The following recipes are from the Cowboy Vegetarian Cookbook. TENNIS SHOE TONGUE: Select an old one. The price is better and it may have picked up some natural flavor depending on where it has been worn. Boiling is suggested but it may also be fried to a crisp and served on a bed of marinated sweat shirt. Garnish with pickled shoe string. SEED CORN CAP PIZZA: Carefully clean with a fish s...
Letter to the editor, The Dayton School District is running replacement levies and a Capital Levy (a feasibility study to improve electrical outlets in the Elementary/Middle School building to be able to install air conditioning). During our last “community meeting” a few years ago, this was one of our (yours and the district’s) major concerns. I am in favor of and will vote for the future of our school district by always supporting the education of our students. Please check out the District website, the Citizens for Education website, and t...
We made a quick trip to the wet side last weekend, slopping over Snoqualmie Pass and boring into the seemingly incessant misty rain of the Puget Sound area. Our destination was the Olympic Peninsula and we joined the masses ripping northbound on I-405 to catch one of several ways to extend Highway 104 across the briny deep. The frenetic-ness seems to begin permeating you as you angle downhill after cresting Snoqualmie’s 3,015-foot elevation and the relatively warmer climate dissipates the snow and slush into a shiny black pavement. For drivers...
McGraw posed an interesting question. If a cowboy herds a herd of cattle, we call him a herder. If a sheepman herds a flock of sheep, he’s still a herder. Why isn’t he called a flocker? Oley has always referred to himself as a cow disturber. I think that is an accurate description of what cowboys do. The definition of disturb is: to annoy or disrupt. “Where ya goin’, Bill?” “I’m gonna go check the cows.” Which really means, “I’m gonna ride into the bunch, git’em all up, turn’em around and ju...
To the editor, The Dayton School District needs your support with the upcoming replacement levies. The State of Washington is committed to providing the costs of basic education. The local levies help to support the parts of public education that are not fully funded by the state allocation. Here are just a few of the many ways the levy funds are used: smaller class sizes, counselors and nurses, transportation for field trips and club activities, athletics, classroom supplies, CTE classes (Home Economics, Wood Shop, Ag Shop), Business...

Elizabeth Gibson's "Outlaw Tales of Washington" (available at Dingle's of Dayton) includes a chapter "The Great Nude Bathing Case." It's about little Home, Washington, a Pierce County settlement near Van Geldern Cove, now populated with get-away beach homes. But in 1897, three men bought 26 acres for $7 an acre on terms: $20 down and money raised by digging clams and selling timber. The three men, George Allen, O. A. Verity and F. F. Odell, established the Mutual Home Colony Association, an...

I confess to not owning a tractor. I have plenty of friends nearby with tractors. But in a lapse of good judgment I borrowed one to brush hog a patch of weeds. Experienced farmers, even an 8 year-old farm kid knows that you always drive a tractor thumbs up. I didn’t remember. As I was farming around I managed to hit a post with the front wheel. The steering wheel spun like a helicopter blade and jammed my protruding thumb! It swelled up so big it wouldn’t fit through the neck of a quart jar...
