“Unity is strength…When this is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”

The Dayton Memorial Library would not be where it is today without the help of the Friends of the Dayton Memorial Library. Since the District formed in 2005, this group of volunteers have manned our booth at the fair as well as assisted in outreach, programming, distribution and fundraising.

One of the ways they raise money is through the Library Book Sale. Not only does this go toward funding exciting library programs, and purchasing new materials, but it also gives old or undervalued books an opportunity to find a new home. Books that are not sold at the sale are given to Better World Books: an organization that distributes books to areas of the world where literature is less accessible.

The Fall 2019 Book Sale will take place at 250 E Main Street, between Ray’s Roast and Blue Mountain Realtor’s, on Friday and Saturday, October 4 and 5 at 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and 1–4 p.m. Sunday, October 6. Don’t miss out!

National Friends of the Library Week will be observed October 20-26. Supporting the Friends, in turn supports the library and allows us to better serve our community. Considering becoming a friend? Head on over to https://friendsdml.org/ to sign up!

October is also full of exciting programs and events for all ages. Returning is a Humanities Washington program “What happened to America’s Public Schools?” presented by professor Johann Neem in the Delany room on October 10 at 6 p.m. Join us to learn how schools went from being a point of national pride, to a highly polarized topic.

In addition, Discovery Kids comes to you every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and Family Story Time at the library on October 3 at 6:30 p.m. But wait! There’s more. We have quite the treat for young readers. This Halloween, when the ghosts and goblins hit the streets, the Library is hosting an after-school party. The kids sip a cup of hot chocolate, nibble some popcorn and work on a special craft to take home. To top it all off, a movie will be shown throughout Halloween evening starting at 5:30 p.m. Of course, costumes are very much welcome.
