DAYTON–A good fourth quarter was too little, too late as cold shooting for three quarters of the game against the Riverview Lady Panthers tilted the 58-34 balance in favor of the non-conference visitors last Friday.
Dayton-Waitsburg is 0-4 as it heads into Eastern Washington Athletic Conference play this weekend, taking on Liberty Christian on Friday and Kittitas Saturday in a pair of home stands prior to the Christmas Break. After Santa says his “ho, ho, hoes” and the Christmas wrapping is cleaned up, the Lady Deedubs head to Milton-Freewater for a Christmas Tournament Dec. 27 and 28.
Finding an even keel has been a challenge for the Lady DWs in the first few games, according to Assistant Coach Desirae Jones. “The DW girls are having a hard time playing hard and consistent through four quarters. They have moments of energy and intensity but then it fizzles.”
Sadie Seney paced DW with a team-high 10 points and Mackena Culley wasn’t far behind with nine.
The Lady Panthers jumped to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter and DW had trouble in the second quarter too, struggling to score and having a hard time stopping Riverview’s Skylin Munson and Jennifer Gonzalez.
“Munson and Gonzalez are strong players and we couldn’t shut them down,” Jones said.
Riverview continued its assault with a 14-5 second quarter, giving them a 27-11 half time lead.
The third quarter was a low-scoring period with the Lady Panthers making eight to DW’s five.
In the fourth, DW shooting came alive as both teams enjoyed the highest-scoring quarter of the game. Riverview poured in 23 points and Dayton-Waitsburg wasn’t far behind with 18 points in the quarter.
