Chilly first quarters spell losses for DW girls

MILTON-FREEWATER–An offensive shoot out and a defensive battle characterized two Christmas Tournament games played by Dayton-Waitsburg here last weekend.

The DW Girls dropped the Friday game against Irrigon 57-47, and were in the hunt against Stanfield in Saturday’s game, which was lost 38-30.

Seven Lady D-Dubs were in the scorebook in the Irrigon game, led by 5-11 junior post Sadie Seney with 22 and 5-10 freshman guard Claudia Benavides with 10.

DW had a slow start out of the blocks and were outscored 19-5 in the first quarter, but picked up the pace offensively with 11 second-quarter points while holding Irrigon to six for a respectable 25-16 half time score.

Both teams matched one another in the third quarter and Irrigon edged DW in the fourth 17-16 proving that the difference was the icy offensive for Dayton-Waitsburg in the first quarter.

Irrigon’s P. Chavez scored 24 to lead all scoring.

Versus Stanfield on Saturday, the cool shooting in the first quarter again proved to be the team’s undoing.

The Tigers surged ahead 14-7 in the first quarter and then kept DW at bay the remainder of the game, essentially matching scoring down the stretch to maintain the eight-point edge at the final buzzer.

Dayton-Waitsburg’s offense was bolstered by Benavides with 14 and Seney with 12, and five other teammates chipped in a few buckets. Both Mackena Culley and Kirsten Miller scored six points.
