DW can't counter red hot Lady Irish's outside shooting

WAITSBURG–The DeSales Lady Irish visited Dayton-Waitsburg last weekend and, from the get-to, shelled the Lady D-Dubs then coasted to a 52-39 Eastern Washington Athletic Conference win here January 4.

Dayton-Waitsburg is still winless, 0-2 in EWAC play, 0-8 overall.

The Lady D-Dubs faced Walla Walla Valley Academy Tuesday, losing 47-34 (additional results to be reported next week), and host White Swan Saturday night with the tip off at 5 p.m. League play continues at Columbia on Tuesday, January 14, with the game getting underway at 6 p.m. Walla Walla Valley Academy plays the return game at Waitsburg on January 16.

The Lady Irish were impressive with hot outside shooting in the first quarter, jetting to a 19-10 lead after eight minutes, hitting three pointers to jump ahead.

"DeSales started out on fire with their outside shooting," said Des Jones, assistant coach. "We recovered and played with them, trailing by 9 at half."

But the Lady Irish came out after half time and again shelled DW. "The third quarter we really let down with the defense and they outscored us 16-8," Jones said.

The defense rose to the challenge in the fourth period, cramping the Lady Irish's style while the offense turned up the heat, but it was too little, too late. "We refocused in the fourth and stepped up the defense but we ran out of time," Jones said.

DW's Mackena Culley not only scored a team-high 12 points, but was a force on defense, Jones said.

DeSales' Burratto scored the game-high 16 points, with teammate Thomas close behind with 15.
