At the Legislature’s’ opening ceremonies, freshman lawmaker Representative Terry Nealey learned of his legislative committee assignments. Nealey, will be serving on three standing House committees: Technology, Energy, and Communications and Transportation.

Dayton triples renewable energy participation in Blue Sky challenge.

The Bluewood Alpine Race Team competed in the first race of the season for the Emerald Empire Youth Ski League (EEYSL) last weekend at Schweitzer. Dayton was represented by two skiers—Tyler Abramson, 11 and Eva Siess, 7.

January, 18, 1995

Dayton Booster Club members are concerned people with a common goal: to assist in financial support of extracurricular activities for students of Dayton Junior High and High School.

The Dayton Lions Club recently donated $300 to the High school baseball field renovation project and $100 to Christmas baskets for the needy. Each member donated used blankets to the Congregational Church project that makes sleeping bags for the homeless in Walla Walla and Spokane.

Fifty Years Ago

January 22, 1970

A silver thaw, worst in the memory of local residents, hit Dayton and Columbia County a crippling blow Sunday and Monday, January 18-19, as utility lines, trees and shrubs were sheathed with a heavy, damaging coating of ice. All utility services (telephone, power, television) were disrupted throughout the city and county as early as Saturday evening, December 17.

Miss Janet Smith was the winner, January 15, of the local American Legion oratory contest sponsored by Frank E. Bauers Post No. 42. Adjutant Jack McLaren, local and district oratory chairman: Miss Cheryl Lockard; Miss Joanne Mayne, Miss Smith, Miss Jolene Groom: Miss Kathee Juris and Robert Shields, DHS speech class instructor.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

January 18, 1945

The Columbia County Infantile Paralysis drive, in coordination with drives all over the United States, started on Sunday, Jan. 14 and will end January 30. The local committee under the direction of the county chapter present, Kent Caldwell, principal of the Dayton High School, have worked out a campaign this year which will include the March of Dimes Drive.

Stephen F. Huwe, 20, a graduate of Dayton High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane L. Huwe, left January 8, for service with the U.S. Army.

Staff Sergeant William A. Elder, 19, ball turret gunner of a B-17 Flying Fortress of the 96th Bomb Group, has been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air medal for “meritorious achievement” while participating in the Eight Air Force bombing attacks on Nazi war industries and supporting ground forces battling in Germany

One Hundred Years Ago

January 17, 1920

Representatives of France, Great Britain, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Spain, Japan and Brazil members of the council of the League of Nations met in “cloak room” of the French foreign office at 10 o’clock this morning for the first meeting.

When the next shipment of sugar arrives in Dayton the housewives of this vicinity will be compelled to pay in the neighborhood of 18 cents for the cane variety.

Walla Walla: A superior court jury after 18 minutes deliberation convicted Mrs. Jennie MacArthur, prominent ranch owner of this section of illegal possession of liquor. She was first arrested on the charge of being a jointist, but a lesser charge was substituted.
