Columbia County Citizen's Academy seeks candidates for coming session

DAYTON–The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office will offer a 13-week Citizen’s Academy at 6-8 p.m. every Friday night in the training room of the Columbia County Fire District No. 3, 111 Patit Road in Dayton, beginning March 6 and continuing to May 29, 2020.

The intent of the Citizen’s Academy is to create better understanding and communication between citizens and law enforcement through education.

The curriculum over the 13-week course include such topics as public education and outreach, patrol procedures, the reserve deputy program, use of force and defensive tactics, street weapons and officer safety, crime prevention and personal safety, court procedures, prosecuting crime, criminal investigations, collision investigations, sex offender information, drug enforcement, search and rescue and boat patrol. Participants of the Citizen’s Academy will also be allowed to make a two-hour ride along with a deputy on patrol.

A background check will be conducted on all applicants. Those applying must not have any felony nor recent misdemeanor convictions. Application deadline is Friday, February 28, 2020. Persons accepted into the program will be notified no later than February 28, 2020.
