DW ladies notch first victory

WAITSBURG–“An amazing team effort” marked the Dayton-Waitsburg girls basketball team’s first victory of the 2019-2020 season when then downed Walla Walla Valley Academy January 16 here.

DW faced Pomeroy last Tuesday, and traveled to Touchet Wednesday night, then to Liberty Christian on Jan. 24 to finish its four consecutive road games. They travel to Liberty Christian on Friday, Jan. 24, then turn around and host the team on Wednesday, Jan. 29 for the make-up game from earlier this season.

The Lady D-dubs are 1-6 in league, 1-12 overall.

Dayton-Waitsburg scored steadily throughout the game while keeping one of the Lady Knight’s top scorers on ice.

“The girls had great intensity on defense and it resulted in points on the other end,” said Asst. Coach Des Jones. “Every girl that suited up took the floor with a lot of heart.”

The Lady D-dubs concentrated on defending WWVA’s Browning and King, with Mackena Culley sticking on Kings most of the game, holding the usually prolific scorer to one basket. WWVA’s Browning scored 21, but the monumental defensive effort kept all other Lady Knight scoring in the single digits, Jones said.

Sadie Seney scored a game-high 24. “Seney was a force last night,” Jones said.

“It was exciting to see our girls play like we know they can,” she said.

At Mabton on Saturday, January 18, the Lady D-dubs were bumped and jostled by the physical Mabton Lady Cougars, who notched a 69-34 win.

“Mabton played a very physical game and we had a hard time taking care of the ball with their press,” Jones noted.

The Lady Cougars zoomed to a 22-12 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 42-24 in the second. But halftime adjustments put the binders on DW as the Lady Cougars held the team to just 10 second-half points.

Seney led the team with 11, including swishing a trey. Mabton’s Herrera was the game’s leading scorer with 16, and Guevara chipped in 14 with Hernandez making 11.
