Dayton Memorial Library Interim Director
This is a response from Dusty Waltner to questions about her resignation from the position of Director for the Columbia County Rural Library District:
I was offered an amazing opportunity that I just couldn’t pass up. It will definitely be bittersweet to leave. I have enjoyed my time here in Dayton serving the people of Columbia County. I began my journey here in March of 2015 and it has been an amazing five-plus years in which I was able to learn about this incredible rural farming community, grow both personally and professionally, and form lifelong bonds with many of the residents here. I experienced many of my firsts here in Dayton, including: riding a combine, participating in a County Fair, and learning to can my own vegetables.
With regards to the library, there are so many things that fill me with joy. Of course, the Youth Library is one of my favorite accomplishments. The smiles and laughter of the kids and their families when they walk down the stairs to their own dedicated library will forever mean the world to me. We were able to create an area where youth can explore, learn, and read without worrying about conflicting with adults, being told to be quiet, or that they need to vacate computers to allow adults to use them. I know how important it is for youth to feel welcome in their local library. My childhood library was not welcoming to youth and I experienced first-hand being kicked out for sitting in the isle reading a book. I wanted to ensure that area youth have a safe, welcoming space where they know they are valued members of society and I believe we accomplished just that.
I am also extremely proud of the robust collaborative relationship we have built with Dayton School District and teachers, as well as local organizations and community members. We were able to work with teachers to ensure we have resources to enhance lesson plans and assignments, provide regular field trips for various classes throughout the year, and collaborate on programs to improve literacy and technology skills throughout our community.
Finally, of course our remodel has to be on the list. While not quite finished, it is well on its way. We have new paint and carpet installed and it looks amazing. With the installation of new furniture In early August and a more efficient layout the main floor will provide a fresh, welcoming atmosphere once we are able to reopen. The vertical lift will also be installed in August and will provide full unassisted access to the entire library, meeting one of our major strategic goals.
I will truly miss this community and the wonderful people that made going to work every day feel more like old friends catching up over coffee. I have heard from so many families that didn’t use the library before my arrival and I am thrilled that I was given the opportunity to help build those positive experiences for those families. I am proud of the work we were able to accomplish during my tenure and know that I am leaving the library well positioned for years to come.
