Ten Years Ago

The Dayton Swim Team, coached by Rosy Nechedom, had another great season of swimming. About 70 kids between 6 and 18 years old participated in various meets throughout the summer. Twenty-four were brand new to the team and a few were pretty new to swimming. Forty-two swimmers earned the right to represent the team in the final county meet in Colfax.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

August 9, 1995

Dale E. McElroy, son of Richard and Clelsia McElroy, was promoted to Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps. Dale plans to pursue his career in avionics electronics, and is stationed in Millington, Tenn.

The Dayton Chamber of Commerce was addressed last week by an aviation consultant and the consultant asked the Board what the community felt about having an airport.

Fifty Years Ago

August 13, 1970

Six teams of draft horses will compete in a pulling match at the Sunday afternoon track show, during the 80th Columbia County Fair as a special entertainment feature. The contest is being sponsored by the Washington State Horse Pullers Association.

SP/4 Pat Manning arrived in Dayton on leave after serving for the past year in Vietnam. He is the son of Alonzo Manning and Mrs. Hazel Whitmire, and has received the Unit Citation, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Manning was stationed at Cu Chi, northwest of Saigon and in Cambodia.

Warrant Officer Candidate W. Eric Thorn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Thorn, was an honor student of his class of 111 men completing flight training at the Army Primary Helicopter School.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

August 9, 1945

The Dayton pilots, fighter pilot Mike Floyd and Ray Swanson, bomber pilot, both serving in Italy, and Clay McCauley, glider pilot, serving in France, arrived home from the European front. Dick Hughes, a test pilot in the Air Corps, was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines for three years.

Dayton’s largest fire in a number of years occurred Saturday afternoon when for seven hours the volunteer fire department battled a stubborn fire ravaging the C. E. Suffield furniture store. It was estimated that $30,000 loss was suffered with $10,000 covered by insurance.

Pvt. Douglas H. McKinley, son of Mrs. Lanna McKinley, has been awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Medal.

One Hundred Years Ago

August 11, 1920

This year there is one of the most prolific yields of huckleberries ever known by the inhabitants of “these parts” and every one is using his vacation days in gathering a little of this wonderful crop for himself.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

August 10, 1895

In Alex Price’s threshing outfit there are 26 men and 60 horses. They run three headers, a 28-inch thresher and a steam engine. The outfit passed through town Tuesday, taking up all the space on Main Street for a time.
