What's New at School?

DAYTON–It was announced by Superintendent Guy Strot, through an email on October 11, that Dayton and Waitsburg sports will have their first practice and conditioning starting Monday, October 19. This applies to the high school, but not middle school athletes. These practices will replace the summer season that was not available to student athletes this year. There will be no games during this time, as the summer season usually consists of solely team practice.

The Volleyball, Football, and Basketball teams will be given the opportunity to practice with their coaches, using school facilities. However, Dayton and Waitsburg students will not be practicing together, but separately at their own school facilities, and only 10 people, including players and coaches will be allowed in practice at one time. Social distancing guidelines will be followed as well. In addition to the high school athletes’ chance to have a “summer-ball” makeup opportunity, they will also be allowed a chance at a basketball season this year. So far, boys’ and girls’ basketball season is expected to begin on December 1, and games to begin on December 28.

Despite all of the inconveniences that this year has brought upon many of us, things for Dayton High School have been slowly but surely looking up. Despite the COVID-19 virus which has hindered in-person learning, and interactions in other Washington counties, Dayton Schools have been able to open up for part-time in person learning. This half-and-half learning plan has worked very well for the staff and students.

Sports have not been available to Dayton since the spring, when schools in Washington were suddenly shut down. Now it seems that the beloved Dayton-Waitsburg High School sport teams will be able to carry on with practices. It sure feels good to get some normalcy back into our everyday life.
