High-speed chase ends inside Columbia County line

POMEROY-Garfield County Undersheriff Calvin Dansereau became involved in a high-speed motorcycle pursuit with Paul Edward Hines, 51, of Richland, Wash., starting in Garfield County and ending in Columbia County, resulting in a non-fatal injury, one-vehicle collision on October 18, 2020.

Undersheriff Dansereau pursued a Honda motorcycle driven by Hines in a high-speed chase at 11:57 p.m., Sunday night which proceeded west on Highway 12 at milepost 395, involving speeds up to 110-117 miles-per-hour. After it became evident the motorcycle was going to cross county lines, Garfield County Sheriff's Office contacted the Columbia County Sheriff's Office to assist with the pursuit.

The chase ended at milepost 384, just inside Columbia County, when Hines failed to negotiate a curve, leaving the roadway and coming to rest down an embankment filled with roadside vegetation. Hines was transported to the Dayton General Hospital by ambulance with injuries. He was held for assessment and released to Garfield County Sheriff's Office early the next morning October 19. He was wearing a helmet.

Hines was booked into the Garfield County jail and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Eluding and Driving While on Suspended License, Third Degree.

The incident is under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
