“To Save a Life” movie will be shown to teens and parents in theaters nationwide and in Dayton. Overnight, the film received a #1 Fandango Fan rating and maintained it for over a month.

Columbia County Auditor Nancy Hoffman received a new ballot scanner which will make tabulations of the ballots accurate and much faster.

The local Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles presented a gift of $500 to the Dayton Memorial Library as a gesture of support to the library for its services to the elderly. This is the twenty-second year of the grant program for libraries to receive the grants to purchase large print books for the elderly.

Waitsburg and Starbuck receive money on behalf of the Columbia County Regional Health Foundation, Dr. S. R. Hevel and Bob Compson presented a $4,000 check to the Waitsburg Ambulance Service and a $1,500 check to the Fire District No. 1 in Starbuck.

Fifty Years Ago

November 5, 1970

Gary Von Cadow, Democratic nominee, is the apparent winner of the race for Columbia County Sheriff on the basis of preliminary, unofficial returns from all 14 precincts of the county. County resident turnout Tuesday was 75.48%. The absentee ballots count will start Wednesday.

Spencer Mehas, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mehas, was a bit apprehensive as Dr. W. W. Day, county health officer, administered his rubella immunization one of about 530 children immunized during the day. Assisting Dr. Day was Mrs. Sharon (Miller) VanHoudt, registered nurse.

Miss Tressa Warren, 17-year-old senior at Dayton High School, was selected as the 1970-71 Wheat Queen to represent Columbia County. Miss Warren is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warren.

November 1, 1945

Celebrating Fifty years In Creamery Work, Will Retire. November 8, Gus Hansen is holding an open house at his home on Third Street in celebration of his 50 years in creamery work and will retire at the end of the year. Starting the New Year, the Dayton Creamery and Ice Works will be under the operational direction of Elwood Hansen, son of Gus, recently discharged from the armed service, and Jack Kitterman, who has been with the concern more than 20 years as head manufacturing processes.

One Hundred Years Ago

November 3, 1920

The concrete steamer Cape Fear, a United States shipping board vessel, was sunk in the deepest part of Narragansett Bay tonight in a collision with the Savannah line steamer City of Atlanta. At a late hour, 19 of the crew of 24 of the sunken vessel were unaccounted for. The Cape Fear sank in three minutes, about half way between Castle Hill, on the Newport short, and Rose Island.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 31, 1895

Bad Indians: An Indian was arrested in Dayton for drunkenness; six other Indians attempted to chop down the door and liberate him. The marshal procured aid, and before they had accomplished their purpose, arrested the whole outfit and lodged them with their companion. Six-shooters were displayed and some trouble was had in forcing them to submit.
