DAYTON-The high school athletes of here, as well as their fellow Waitsburg High athletes, were recently given the news that sports programs are on a slow path to recovery. This past week, the first sport practices and conditioning known as “Summer Session” began.
Due to the changes the Covid-19 dilemma has brought to Dayton School, there has been lots of uncertainty as to whether DHS sports could be able to continue this year. The season for volleyball and football was missed, but now the athletes have the opportunity to practice and condition for all sports, and it looks as though a basketball season is to take place this December.
While the athletes of DHS are grateful for the Summer Session opportunity, there have been practice cancellations this past week due to lack of athlete eligibility, and participation. Since there have been no sports so far this year, many students have taken advantage of their free-time after school by taking local jobs, and working to save money.
Because the Summer Session practices were so suddenly announced, and only offer one practice per week for each sport, many students have chosen to continue working after school, and to wait to play sports when their proper season has come around.
The success of Summer Session for Dayton cannot be made certain yet, but hopefully DHS sports will continue as normally as possible soon.
