Summer Club Activities
DAYTON–One of the biggest summer activities for kids here is their 4-H and FFA projects. Those who raise livestock projects spend a lot of their vacation caring for their animals, and preparing for fair time. This past weekend, many 4-H club members received their show hogs, marking the beginning of the season for them!
The 4-H and FFA clubs are essential programs to the youth of our community; teaching them responsibility, leadership, and so much more. Every year these kids, whether they are elementary, middle, or high schoolers, take on the responsibility of raising an animal for months before fair time comes. They spend their summers working with their animals in order to bring home a pretty ribbon, and a big check, and with the complications of last year’s fair due to COVID-19, this one may be more exciting than ever.
While livestock projects are a huge part of these programs, they also provide groups that teach other great skills as well. 4-H includes things like marksmanship, quilting, and cooking, and FFA provides endless opportunities for things like soils, vet science, trap shooting, and parliamentary procedure. While not all of these projects take place during the summer, they can all be entered and judged upon at fair time in September.
All of these great activities are great ways for kids to spend their spare time, and to fill their summers with a little extra fun. Hopefully, their efforts will be made worth it, with a normal and fun 2021 county fair.
