Lady Wolfpack suffers slow start against Panthers

DAYTON–With the season's end in sight, the going has been tough for the Lady Wolfpack, coming out on the short end of the stick against River View 54-21 here Tuesday, and dropping last week's game at Mabton 65-19.

Tonight the Pack visits TriCities Prep and then the final regular/covid season game and Senior Night will be Friday, June 11 in Dayton against Columbia-Burbank.

Sadie Seney scored 11 in the losing contest with River View and the defense didn't have an answer for Lady Panthers Jennifer Gonzalez and Marina Jimenez. Gonzales pumped in 15 and Jimenez 10 for River View.

Although the Lady Panthers finished the first quarter ahead 9-2, the mismatch wasn't as apparent until the third quarter when River View pounded in 13 points to DW's two for a 37-15 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Dayton-Waitsburg shot 67% from the free throw line but poorly from the field, making only eight of 23 field goal attempts, and just one of 12 three-point tries.

River View shot 77% from the free throw stripe and made 19 field goal attempts for a 35% mark.

At Mabton on June 1, DW's starters didn't make the trip and, pointing to injuries, Head Coach Tamira Culley suited up and started players among whom only one had significant varsity experience.

"They played with a lot of heart and did their best with the full court pressure that continued well into the third quarter," Culley said. "Injuries continue to hamper our squad but we now have a week off until our next game."

Mabton's pressure pumped their first-quarter lead to 20-7, then grew it to 44-10 at halftime.

Andrews scored a bucket and a gifter in the first quarter, and baskets by Megan Forney and Mohala Bramer added to the team's seven points. Sagelyn Kilts's basket and free throw accounted for DW's three points in the second period. Forney hit a bucket and a free throw in the third, and Kilts was strong inside with two field goals. Makenna Barron sank two gifters in the third. The team was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
