FINLEY–Injuries to key players played a role alongside youth and inexperience in Dayton-Waitsburg's 66-0 loss to the River View Panthers here Thursday, October 22.
The Wolfpack will finish the season Friday in Waitsburg versus Columbia-Burbank. It will be Senior Night with a 7 p.m. kick off.
"I expected the whole game to play out like the first quarter, but the injury bug caught us," said Coach Troy Larsen. "We lost four players to injuries starting with senior Brayden Mohney (wide receiver/defensive back 6-1, 155 lbs.) who got caught up in friendly fire after making a great open field tackle and ended up with a concussion.
"Shortly after, Jayce Gleason (6-1, 175-lb. sophomore lineman) went down with a broken collarbone, followed by our defensive leader in tackles Theo Anderson (6-1, 235-lb.) breaking his ankle running down a tackle," Larsen said. "We finished the half with our last senior Hunter Berg taking a helmet shot to his head and suffering whip lash.
"We played the second half with a lot of young student athletes out of their normal positions helping us finish the night out," he said. "River View played aggressive defense and held our offense to minimal gains all night."
Subbing in for the young Wolfpack were inexperienced reserves who were outmatched by the experience afforded by the eight seniors and nine juniors on River View's 35-player roster.
Offensively, DW possessions were short and ended with a punt while Panther possessions, while against gutsy resistance by the younger, less experienced Wolfpack, usually finished with a score.
River View and the Wolfpack battled through the first quarter, sizing one another up, and the quarter ended with the Panthers leading 7-0.
River View mixed up the run and pass, Miguel Farias scoring in the second quarter on a 39 yard run. Ajani Fornos found Pio Guzman for two TDs and a third to Jude Senger for a 33-0 half time lead.
The Panthers scored quickly on an 11-yard Fornos run to make it 39-0 early in the third, then Farias set the running clock with a two-yard plunge for six and 46-0.
In the shortened second half, DW's three offensive possessions were well defended and went three and out.
