Carol Brown-West, Dayton resident and formerly of Browning, Mont., passed away suddenly on November 10, 2021 at the Dayton General Hospital following a brief illness. She was 69.
She was born in Browning, Mont., on April 20, 1952, to George and Rita Trombley Croff. She grew up in Browning and graduated from high school there. Carol was a member of the Blackfeet Indian tribe.
She married William Roger Brown in Browning and they made their home there. He worked as a police officer and she worked in the pencil factory on the reservation. Carol and Bill later divorced.
She met Jay West, who was a long-haul truck driver, and they were married. Jay and Carol lived in many different places all over the United States. She has been in Dayton, Wash., since 1993.
In more recent years, Carol has been a steady caregiver for Jay. She provided loving care and comfort to anyone in the community that needed an in-home caregiver. Generally speaking, Carol liked to keep to herself. She quietly enjoyed her family, loved spending time with her grandkids, and she also liked to go to yard sales or thrift stores looking for that special treasure. She liked having family Bar-B-Qs too.
Carol is survived by a large and extended family that include her 6 children; Laurie Brown-Garcia of Dayton, Crystal Brown of Lyle, Wash., Kelley Sharp, Browning, Mont., Michael, Sherry, and Mary West all living in Dayton; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; as well as her brother Steven Croff of Browning and her sister, Mona Croff, Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, and by 3 brothers, Melvin, Kenny, and Ronald Croff and by her parents.
A family service was held in Dayton on Monday, November 15 and another service will be later in Browning. She will be laid to rest at the Willow Creek Cemetery in Browning, Mont. Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.
