Fall Festivities for DHS
DAYTON-High School is moving through the school year with flying colors. Many events have happened behind those double doors in the past two months. The fall Holidays have come and gone- but not without celebration by the students of Dayton High School. It is a favorite tradition in our little school to celebrate the holidays as a school.
Halloween was simply acknowledged with a dress-up day; students were invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school, and given the option of participating in a contest (judged by the ASB) for the best costume. The winners of this contest were senior students Ella Larson and Eloy Garcia-Romero, as the characters “Shrek” and “Donkey” from the popular children’s movie “Shrek”. Sarah Reser’s 5th grade students also had a costume contest of their own, and were paid a visit by the high school ASB Council to assist in the judging, and to join them in their classroom Halloween carnival.
The week preceding Thanksgiving included festivities that not only were fun for the students and staff, but benefited their community as well. Every year the staff of DHS are included in a Thanksgiving Door Decorating Competition. The teachers, with the help of their students, decorate their classroom door in a theme relating to fall, Thanksgiving, or anything along those lines. This year’s winner of the Thanksgiving Door Decorating competition, judged by Principal Kristina Brown, and school secretary Angie Alleman, were: Mr. Doug Yenney and his Junior Chemistry class, awarded with an ice cream social. In second place was Ms. Kristen Frankie, and in third Mrs. Kristine Warren.
The Junior and Senior classes were at war throughout the week, competing to win the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Organized by the ASB Council, the goal of the food drive was for each class to donate as many non-perishable food items as they could; in turn, they would win their class an ice cream social. The activity was intended to give back to the community by providing extra supplies to our local food bank, in the spirit of the food-oriented holiday. In total, the high school students donated around 250 items. The winners, and recipients of a class ice cream social, were the seniors, having donated 104 items. The juniors came in a close second, with 98 donations.
Now, we head into the winter season, which brings even more exciting festivities, as well as the community’s favorite Wolfpack sport; Basketball. Basketball practices have already begun, and the first games are quickly approaching. The ASB Executive Council has a Winter Spirit Week in the works- including many new and original ideas that they cannot wait to be shared.
Now, Dayton High School can only hope that the winter season, and all that it brings, will be just as successful as the fall.
