What's New at School?

Spirit and Success for DHS

DAYTON–High School (DHS) has had so many exciting experiences within the last few months of school. From a successful spirit week, Prom, ASB Elections, and many achievements by students, the year will certainly be “going out with a bang”.

The high school finally enjoyed a much-needed Spring Spirit Week, compliments of the DHS Associated Student Body (ASB) April 25 through 29. The week began with a simple day, including class meetings, cookies, and a “Future Career” dress-up day.

Tuesday, the students enjoyed a movie day for two class periods, congregating in their advisor’s classrooms to watch “The Sandlot”, the dress-up theme of the day was “Floral”.

The school was treated to a Field Day at the high school football field on Wednesday. Students participated in a number of fun activities, including the 100m Egg Race, Three-Legged Race, an ordinary 100m dash, a catching competition, and a foxtail throwing competition. Students wore any jersey of their choice and marched down to the field together as a school. The day’s activities were well received and enjoyed by all.

a new activity was introduced to DHS on Thursday. Students were offered the opportunity to compete in a “Super Smash Bros.” Tournament, a popular Nintendo video game. Teams of three were assembled from each class, competing in virtual combat against their peers. The winner of the tournament was the Senior class, for both the boy’s and girls’ competitions. The senior boys also battled staff members Jeannie Walter, Dave Phillips, and Doug Yenney, unfortunately, their lack of experience led the staff team to a loss. This activity was found to be well enjoyed by all students, and even the staff that attended.

On Friday, the ASB Council led their school in a pep rally in the high school gym. The games included were “Pop It!”- a balloon pop relay, “Dizzy Dawgs”-students were asked to complete a task while dizzy, “Bungee Battle”- players competed against another student, attempting to avoid touching a garbage can while each holding the end of an athletic band, and finally “Gladiator Jousting”- two students stood on an elevated surface and attempted to knock their opponent off of their platform with a “gladiator stick”. Staff members joined in on this activity and possibly became more competitive than the students.

Following the busy spirit week was Prom, and ASB Elections. The Prom was held at Waitsburg’s Preston Hall and was a fun night for those who attended. Dayton seniors Trinity Anderson, Jesse Gant, Sage Kilts, Mikel Vance, Ella Larson, Max Schmidt, Eloy Garcia-Romero, Julia Brooks, Trista Villaro, and Dylan Bledsoe were recognized as their school’s Prom Court, the winners of King and Queen being Trista Villaro and Dylan Bledsoe.

ASB Elections for DHS took place on May 10, and the candidates for next year’s council all ran unopposed. The officers of next year’s council will be President Hudson Reser, Vice President Wyntr McCauley, Secretary Parker Brown, Treasurer Grace Trump, Public Relations Manager Cayle Davis, and Public Relations Manager’s Assistant Teagan Culley. The officers will serve under the supervision of future ASB Advisor Sarah Reser.
