New staffing spurs training

DAYTON– The Plus Delta After School Studios board offered goal setting training for The Club staff at the Port of Columbia conference room recently.

Because after-school attendance at the Club has increased to over 45 students per day, there has been an increase in staffing. Many of the employees are in high school or recently out of high school. Executive Director, Jim Pearson and the Club's board want to help the employees develop stronger skills to aid them in their current and future employment.

Brad McMasters, a licensed Washington State educator, wrote the lesson plan. Objectives included teaching the following concepts: 1. Goal setting requires planning, effort, and action, 2. self-reflection and self-awareness is important in goal setting, and 3. self-evaluation and evaluating past goals is essential for setting future goals. Several interactive activities helped to develop their understanding of those concepts.

Two of The Club board members McMasters and Shellie McLeod offered this training at the Port to explain what a Port District is and its role in the community.

"We held the training at the Port because we wanted the employees to understand what a Port District is and why they are important for economic development and workforce development," said McMasters. Currently, the Port offers annual funding to The Club for workforce training.
