Commissioners approve budget amendments

DAYTON-A public hearing was held for 2023 budget amendments and there was discussion about planning for new State requirements for a county coroner at the special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners on January 9.

Chairman of the Commission Ryan Rundell said the purpose of the 2023 budget amendments was to clean up what was already adopted. Chief Accountant Deputy Sadie Gregg gave a summary of the changes for various budgets that were out of balance or incomplete. A salary cost of living adjustment was made for 3% for both elected and hired county workers. Later, the elected officials can be considered for higher increase since it has been several years since they last were given an adjustment.

Budget amendments for solid waste and parks and recreation were adjusted through a diversion. Sheriff Joe Helm made comment about a salary error for Civil Deputy Tim Quigg. Hall thought it could be addressed with a payroll change form. Rundell said there will be other budget amendments in April and the hearing is to address balancing the various budgets. Helm responded that he intends to correct the error as soon as possible even if it is through departmental funds. Former County Auditor Anne Higgins contributed to say a formal change can be made later. Following discussion, the Commissioners approved the budget amendments.

Prosecutor Dale Slack informed the Commission about changes to the requirements for county coroners in Washington State beginning in 2025. Currently he is acting coroner for Columbia County as was previous Deputy Prosecutor April King. The new law will disallow county prosecutors from holding the dual position. The requirements are for someone to be a trained and certified coroner. The notice of the change will allow time to further discuss and decide how to proceed in determining the best course of action.

Helm invited those present for the Law Enforcement Appreciation Day event that was held at the Moose Creek Café and Bakery all morning.
