Wolfpack third in league heading into final weekend

DAYTON–After soaring ahead on unanswered transition baskets, the DW Wolfpack boys survived a couple come-back attempts and wrested a 54-42 non-league win away from the Pomeroy Pirates January 17.

DW is 3-3 in league, 7-5 overall with the final regular-season weekend coming up which will shake out the final league standings. Friday the Wolfpack roams to River View, Saturday they journey to Columbia-Burbank and Monday, Jan. 31, hit the road to Warden. Thursday, Feb. 2, WWVA visits for Senior Night and the final league game of the season.

Columbia-Burbank is 7-0 and first in league standings. TriCities Prep is second with a 7-1 record and DW is in third, ranked ahead of Warden at 3-3. River View is 1-6 and WWVA 0-8.

Dayton-Waitsburg is 30th in the WIAA's RPI standings. Brewster is number one with a 13-4 record.

In the non-league game with Pomeroy, the Wolfpack jumped to an 8-0 lead on baskets by Gage Holm, Ryland Kilts, Monte Pettichord and Spencer Hansen, all transition buckets.

Pomeroy fought back for a 20-10 first-quarter score, then continued rolling with 12 unanswered points to knot it at 22-22 on efforts of Trevin Kimble and Ollie Severs.

Benny Bryan scored in the third to regain DW's lead, he and Hansen combining to give DW a 37-29 lead going into the final quarter.

But DW won the fourth 17-13 without a gap-closing challenge by the Buccaneers.
