LEWISTON–Dayton-Waitsburg Middle School wrestlers competed at the Bi-State Tournament in Lewiston on March 4, with Byron Collier, Akayden Mikesell and Carter Barron doing well in their weight classes. Top three in each weight received medals.
Collier finished second in his weight bracket after pinning a Clarkston wrestler in the first found, losing by fall to a Sacajawea (Lewiston) opponent in the second round, pinning a Lincoln (Clarkston) wrestler in round three, going into the second round before pinning an Asotin wrestler and winning by fall in the fifth over a Pomeroy opponent.
Finishing in third was Mikesell, with an improper equipment DQ in the first round, an injury forfeit in the second, pinning a Lincoln wrestler in the third bout, winning by fall over a Grangeville wrestler in the fourth, then losing by fall in the fifth to a Lincoln opponent.
Carter Barron placed fourth in his weight division, first winning by 7-5, losing by fall in the second round to a Potlatch wrestler, making a third-round pin of a Lincoln opponent, and losing by fall to a Moscow opponent.
Other wrestlers included Gavin Mikesell and Luke Collier. Gavin Mikesell lost bouts to Jenifer and Lincoln (Pullman) wrestlers, and Luke Collier was pinned by Sacajawea and Orofino opponents.
Participating schools included Lincoln Middle School (Pullman), Jenifer MS (Lewiston), Sacajawea MS (Lewiston), Lincoln MS (Clarkston), Moscow MS, Grangeville MS, Orofino MS, Clearwater Valley MS (Kooskia), Tekoa-Rosalia MS, Asotin MS, Pomeroy MS, Potlatch MS, Dayton MS, and Waitsburg MS.
On February 27 at Lincoln in Pullman, Byron Collier won both of his bouts, the first over a Potlatch wrestler, the second over a Pomeroy opponent. Barron, G. Mikesell and A. Mikesell all lost by fall in the first bout. Collier and Hunter Griffen had byes.
In the second go-round, Griffen pinned his Potlatch foe and A. Mikesell won by fall. Barron, G. Mikesell and L. Collier lost their bouts.
