MILTON-FREEWATER–The Dayton-Waitsburg Wolfpack hit the links here on March 29 and two days earlier played a nine-hole match at Walla Walla's Veterans Memorial Golf Course, and this young team showed improvement with lower scores.
"All these golfers are brand new to golf," said Head Coach Mike McGhan. "In fact, Abbi Paolino had only a quick instructional practice prior to her first match. Abbi just turned out for golf and I kind of threw her to the wolves. I could tell she was nervous but she is athletic and very coachable. She strikes the ball well and I think we will see her improve quickly and gain confidence."
At Milton-Freewater, Sarah Daves led teammates with a 62 in the nine-hole, par 36 match. Both William Daves and Paolino carded scores of 65.
Earlier last week, at Veterans Memorial, Carson Potter finished the nine-hole, par 36 match with a 60 score.
"Carson's execution of his shots was the best I've seen this year," McGhan commented. "His short game is his strength."
Sarah Daves finished with a 74. "Sarah's focus is improving," the coach noted. "She keeps the ball in the fairway and her scores have improved every match."
William Daves carded a 78 score. "We are working on William slowing down his game and focusing on each and every shot," McGhan said. "He did much better at Milton-Freewater and his scores on each hole reflected this.
"I am very pleased with the progress of this year's team," McGhan said. "Improvement is not always reflected in their scores; that will come."
