HANFORD–Dayton-Waitsburg Track and Field athletes competed in the Clay Lewis Invitational at Hanford High School on April 1.
The meet includes 14 teams, including Oregon 5A and 3A, Washington 4A and 3A, and Columbia, DW and Highland, and 1A Kiona-Benton.
"We had a small crew due to travel plans and other things," commented Head Coach Dan Nechodom. "Athletes got to experience the effect of a cold, hard wind on their emotions and performances! From the aerodynamic effect on a discus or to the frustrating effect of being pushed forward over the toe-line for the long jump, the experience of dealing with factors mostly out of their control continued the growth into adulthood for many of our young athletes.
Nechodom underscored the performance of Blake French, who set personal records in the 100m and Discus. "Both these events had a wicked crosswind," Nechodom said. French had another PR in the Triple Jump.
On the women's team, Alyssa Byers, a new athlete to track and field this year, added another foot to her personal best in the javelin, Nechodom said.
