"Fire-Grab some iron!" inspires the name of Spring's brew pub. Mike and Ann Spring would have such a theme, and so Chief Spring's Fire and Irons Brew Pub has ignited. The Springs relocated to Dayton last October and purchased Skye Book and Brew on February 1, 2013.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 22, 1998

Following his tour of the Smithsonian exhibit on display at the Dayton Historical Depot, 5th District Representative George Nethercutt stopped by the Dayton Chronicle and shared his views on several subjects. Nethercutt said that he does not hear the issue of breaching the dams being discussed in Washington D.C. and understands the fear that the people of Washington State have about the proposal, but believes that fear is premature

A new permanent Christmas tree was installed at Flour Mill Park.

Local citizens critical of city officials, overly aggressive enforcement of codes, rude and condescending behavior, fear of retribution were all voiced during a two hour meeting. Jerry Smith, local businessman, and Ken Graham had invited Mayor Vachal to the meeting to hear complaints Dayton residents had about City employees.

Fifty Years Ago

April 26, 1973

William D. Ruckelshaus, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, denied a request by the U.S. Forest Service to use DDT to control an infestation by the Tussock Moth of the Douglas-Fir tree in Oregon and Washington.

Eight International Librarians from Europe, Africa and Asia will be visitors in Columbia County for six days, according to an announcement from Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Turner, who are representing the National Grange in this project.

Steve Steinhoff, 21, suffered severe injuries when the vehicle he was driving went over a 30-foot bank three miles from Starbuck on the Kellogg Hollow road. The vehicle, a 1973 Chevrolet, was registered to Lonnie D. Hatfield, grandfather of Steinhoff.

Ground was officially broken for Dayton's new Medical-Dental Clinic at 1002 South Third. Wielding the shovels for the ceremony were SBA District Director William Schumacher of Spokane, Congressman Tom Foley, President L.C. "Mike" Floyd of Columbia County Development Corporation and Corporation Secretary Cecil Allbee.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 22, 1948

The local aerie of Eagles opened its new home Saturday night with a parade on Main street lead by the Walla Walla order's drum and bugle corps. About 500 attended the dance and enjoyed refreshments in the lodge's headquarters.

The first biggest track meet in the history of Dayton takes place Friday night when the locals play host to the Bi-State track meet hosting seven schools. This is the first time since before the war that this meet has been held and the first time it has ever been held here. Teams from Dayton, Clarkston, Lewiston, Moscow, Pullman and Potlatch will bring the number of contestants to about 150 athletes.

John Harting, who has been operating in the sheep business the past number of years has sold his sheep and his lease on Indian grazing land in Montana. He has been running about three thousand ewes and sold them with lambs at side to George Schiffner of Kahlotus.

Six ladies, Mrs. Roy McGee, Mrs. Chas. Turner, Mrs. Laura McGee, Mrs. Ben Bosley, Mrs. Emil Hovrud, and Mrs. Delbert Howard, had a lot to do with making the Howard roundup a joyful success, serving hardy meals to a hard-working crew.

April 14, 1923

Victoria, B.C. Rum runners operating from British Columbia ports will hereafter find their path of departure not quite so easy. Attorney-General Mason announced efforts to control the liquor trade that all ports along the British Columbia coast collectors would refuse to grant "deep sea" clearances to liquor-carrying vessels.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 23, 1898

War was begun between the United States and Spain on April 21. Lay on McKinley and McDuff, and damned be he who cries hold on. Hanna enough!

That was a Yankee trick for Uncle Sam to buy up a load of coal, ship and all that was going to Cape Verde Island for the Spanish fleet.

This sounds a little like the work of Mark Hanna.
