Pool District informational meeting Aug. 15

DAYTON–An informational meeting to explore formation of a swimming pool tax district and subsequent elected board is scheduled at the Delany Building on Tuesday August 15 at 6-8 p.m.

The city pool last operated in 2017 and in 2022, a ballot proposition to create a metropolitan park and recreation district failed at the polls. A group subsequently formed and has succeeded in getting a pool-only tax district proposition on the November general election ballot.

The Just a Pool committee is sponsoring this informational meeting which will include a PowerPoint presentation that features many pools in rural communities in southeastern Washington. This will give attendees something to ponder, imagining how a new pool could benefit this community, then provide the opportunity to discuss and ask questions into the process toward achieving this goal.

The City of Dayton swimming pool in Columbia County has been closed since the end of the 2017 summer swim season. Many people were perplexed at the City of Dayton's decision the following spring, to vacate opening the pool in 2018. Pool patrons wondered how their kids were going to get swim lessons, what would happen to swim team, what of aquacise so many adults utilized for low impact full-body conditioning, what effects will this have on providing a wholistic lifestyle in our town, and what of the children? Where will they go to swim?

If any of these concerns resonate, citizens are encouraged to become familiar with the proposition. Like generations before, it is now up to the next generation to develop a attractive community with a lifestyle conducive to family living.

In addition, the public will meet and learn how each Pool District Commissioner candidates will serve on the proposed Pool District; how as a board they might manage and guide the process to secure a future pool.
