DAYTON–Taking the field as the Dayton Bulldogs for the first time in eight years, youth and inexperience played a role in the Dawgs' 46-14 loss to Sunnyside Christian here September 1, but first-year Head Coach Lucas Collier is hopeful.
"I think we will end up being competitive," Collier said. "We're still a young team with lots to learn."
Sunnyside chalked up a couple of touchdowns before 5-8, 162-lb. senior running back Kaylub Prather ran to daylight and beat all pursuers into the end zone to the raucous cheers of the home-town fans.
The Bulldogs trailed 28-6 at halftime.
"We lost the ball four times in the first half to fumbles," Collier noted.
In the second half, quarterback Byron Collier, Dayton's 6-1, 190-lb. freshman signal caller, scored for the Bulldogs.
Prather led rushing with 166 yards and one touchdown. He was also a force on defense with eight solo tackles and 10 assists.
Collier rambled for 118 yards and one TD, and also intercepted a Sunnyside pass, counted five solo tackles and one sack.
Jordan McCowen is a 6-1, 143-lb. freshman who stepped up on defense with an interception and four solo tackles.
Denver Hutchens was a defensive troublemaker for Sunnyside, recovering a fumble, sacking their quarterback, notching five solo tackles and six assists.
Isaac Jaech intercepted a Sunnyside point-after attempt and also counted six solo tackles and seven assists.
Will Durham made four tackles and sacked Sunnyside's quarterback once.
Dayton hosts Yakama Nation Tribal on the home gridiron Friday with the kickoff at 7 p.m.
