DAYTON–The Timberwolves took advantage of untimely errors and defensively clamped down on the Bulldog run and pass attacks, totaling up 352 yards to Dayton's 193, to register a 34-22 win here last Friday.
The Dawgs, 2-5 overall and in league, travel to DeSales this Friday then will celebrate Homecoming against Garfield-Palouse on November 3. Liberty Christian is on top at 7-0, followed by Pomeroy at 6-1
The Bulldogs spotted the Timberwolves 22 points before Kaylub Prather punched in for a six-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. "I couldn't ask for better play from our team," Prather said after the game. "There are little, minor tweaks that could've made things better." He pointed out that injuries and illness took a few players out of the lineup and the Bulldogs should be at full strength against DeSales. Prather gained 45 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.
Tekoa-Rosalia got on the board early with a Westley Bryan to Brian Place touchdown pass, then both teams battled through the remainder of the first half without scoring. Dayton moved to the Timberwolf five on a Jordan McCowen to Raymond Yutzy 15-yard reception with 35 seconds before halftime, but the team couldn't push the ball across. McCowen connected five of 13 passes for 69 yards and rushed 70 yards on 16 carries for one touchdown.
T-R started the second half with a three-play, 51-yard drive to make it 14-0.
Prather's 23-yard kick-off return set up the Dawgs at midfield, and McCowen rambled 39 yards to the T-R six-yard line on a fourth and three. The Timberwolves nudged the Dawgs closer to the goal line with two offsides penalties but on third and goal, a bad snap reversed the Bulldogs to fourth and goal at the 16. McCowen's pass to Yutzy was complete but short of the touchdown. Yutzy caught three of seven passes for 31 yards in the game.
T-R took over on downs and clawed their way 97 yards in six plays, scoring on a 39-yard run by Isaac Bone for a 22-0 lead.
Byron Collier set up Dayton's first touchdown with a 59-yard kick-off return to the Timberwolf six. There Prather dove in but the PAT run didn't go.
Another break didn't go Dayton's way as the Wolves fumbled at midfield, but Bryan snatched up the ball and kept possession. Brian Place found daylight on third and two, rushing 43 yards for a 28-6 T-R lead.
The Timberwolves executed a successful onside kick but the defense was fired up, Will Durham tackling Bone, Nolan Korslund pursuing Bryan out of bounds for no gain and a pass to Isaac Golden complete but thrown for a loss.
With the ball back, McCowen hit Collier on fourth and ten for a 33-yard advance. Prather moved the ball to the Wolf 11, but a motion penalty backed it up to the 16. McCowen ran the ball in as the third-quarter horn sounded, and Prather's extra point run made it 28-14.
The momentum seemed to shift to Dayton when Bryan passed to Bone who lost the ball up in the air and McCowen caught the lost pigskin.
In business on the T-R 46 early in the fourth quarter, Prather made an 18-yard gain to the 28, Collier took the option four yards and McCowen notched a first down to the 12. Prather and McCowen advanced the ball to the one where Collier ran it in. McCowen's PAT cut the difference to 28-22 and time running out.
Yutzy almost intercepted a Bryan pass at midfield and T-R converted on a third and 30, keeping the drive alive and eventually hacking their way with a time-chewing drive for the final touchdown with fifty seconds remaining. Tekoa-Rosalia's pass defense squelched Dayton's final push to the end zone.
