Lady Dawgs in hunt for first win

By Loyal Baker

DAYTON–The Pirates sailed into town and pillaged the Lady Bulldogs with a 12-2 first quarter and left with a 51-28 win last weekend as the Lady Dawgs, now 0-4, are still looking for their first win.

Dayton (0-1, 0-4) faced Walla Walla Valley Academy last Tuesday (results next week) and travels to Colton Saturday, then hosts Touchet on Tuesday, December 19. The team plays at Tekoa-Rosalia on December 22 before breaking for Christmas.

Against Pomeroy, the Lady Bulldogs couldn't hold back Taylor Gilbert, who led all scorers with 16, and Kendyll Potoshnik, who pumped in 12 points. Dayton's Peyton Benavides sparked the Lady Dawg offense with 15 points and Teagan Culley scored seven.

The team shot 29 percent from the floor and made two of 11 three pointers.

Hosting Highland on December 5, the Lady Dawgs held a 7-3 lead after the first eight minutes, but then the lid went on the bucket and Highland rallied with seven points for a 10-7 half time lead. The Lady Scotties outscored Dayton 10-5 in the third stanza for a 20-12 lead going in the fourth quarter. The lead was too much for the Lady Bulldogs to overcome.

"We started the game strong with only playing six girls," commented Head Coach Jorie Aukerman. Two players are out on injury and one was out sick, she said. "The injured players we hope to have back by next week," Aukerman said.

Culley scored a team-high eight and Marissa Tupling made four. Jaelynn Chapman led the Dayton Bulldogs with her overall effort in rebounding
