Pirate defense quiets Bulldog attack

DAYTON–The young Dayton Bulldogs were pitted against a more experienced Pomeroy Pirate team, and struggled with the pressure while Pomeroy piled up points in long runs for a 72-12 Southeast 1B league win. The Bulldogs are 0-5 overall, 0-2 in conference play.

Dayton lost to Walla Walla Valley Academy Tuesday 68-46 (story next week), and journeys to Colton on Saturday and plays host to visiting Touchet on December 19. A road trip to Tekoa-Rosalia on December 22 closes out the 2023 part of the schedule and leads into Christmas break. No information about Dayton's 56-32 loss to St. John/Endicott-LaCrosse was available.

Pressure and cold shooting took a toll on the Bulldogs as the Pirates used those factors to their advantage, taking a 14-4 first-quarter lead and blowing out the Dawgs with a 27-1 second quarter and a 41-5 half time lead.

The Pirates' strategy and tenacity continued in the second half as the Bulldogs were only able to muster seven points to Pomeroy's 32.

Hitting three pointers for Dayton were Jordan McCowen, Tristan Rennaker and Denver Hutchens. Cesar Morfin drained a pair for the Buccaneers with Reggie Ott and Trace Roberts, who scored a game-high 25 points, also nailed a trey.
