Columbia County Parks and Rec hosts a Community Input Meeting

DAYTON– The Columbia County Parks and Rec District hosted a public forum focusing on the type of pool that would benefit the community. The April 18 meeting was informal and allowed the audience to converse back and forth with the commissioners, and was well received by those in attendance.

Approximately 12 community members attended the forum. They provided input and had an opportunity to ask the district commissioners questions about the plans moving forward. The board gave a brief presentation about the current state and condition of the existing pool and showed a few surrounding pools in small communities to compare.

"If you knew that it was going to cost eight million dollars just to replace exactly what we had before, would you be willing to, after we apply for grants, pay for whatever is left. That is kinda what we need to know," said commissioner Katie Leid.

Keeping that in mind, they asked each attendee to take four sticker-dots and put them on posters under the categories they thought were most important. The categories and results were as follows: a heated pool (14); a seasonal (2); a covered pool for year-round use (5); and either type of pool (3).

Eleven people voted for Aquasize, seven voted for zero-entry for kids and handicap access. Eight votes were cast to have six swim lanes and four voted to increase it to eight swim lanes.

Two voted for a kiddie pool, One voted for concessions, one voted for an L-shaped pool, and one voted for splash pads.

Commissioners will be using the feedback they received to move forward on a feasibility study and start their plans to give to their architect to find out what is possible for the district.
