Small fry turn out for Fishing Derby

DAYTON–An opening season fishing event at the kiddy fishing pond near the Dayton City Park on Wednesday afternoon, April 17 gave many youngsters a chance to catch the "Big One", such as the one Greylynn Bickelhaupt reeled in from the depths.

Greylynn Bickelhaupt, age 6, is the daughter of Kelsy and Garrett Bickelhaupt, and granddaughter of Stacy Klingenstein, from Dayton. Greylynn posed for the camera with Zonie Dedloff, who helped her hold the big fish she caught during the event, because she didn't want to touch it.

The City of Dayton and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife sponsored the fishing event on the first day of fishing at the kiddy pond. They were there to teach first time fisher-kids how to bait their hooks, and bring in the "catch of the day." Multiple volunteers were also available at the pond to help kids cast and catch their fish.

In addition, the City provided fishing poles for those who did not have fishing equipment to use, and to make it more interesting, tagged fish for the kids to redeem for a treasure at the prize table. "What the City did for the kids was super awesome and a neat experience," said Klingenstein.
