Bulldogs in playoffs here Friday

DAYTON–Bulldog Baseball, in its first year back after several years, finished second in the SE 1B Wheat Division and will take on Sunnyside Christian at 1 p.m. here Friday, May 3, as part of a four-team playoff vying for the third- and fourth-place berths to the D7/9 Crossover tournament.

Dayton is hosting three playoff games on Friday. The game between Wheat No. 3 Gar-Pal (3-8) and Grape No. 2 DeSales (9-2) kicks off at 10 a.m. on the D.H.S. diamond. Dayton (9-2) faces Sunnyside Christian (4-7) at 1 p.m., and the two winners of those preliminaries will play at 4 p.m. Pomeroy (11-1), the Wheat Division champion, and Liberty Christian (11-1) the Grape Division leader, play for first and second seed at Liberty on Friday at 4 p.m.

At SJEL on April 27, Denver Hutchens pitched a five-inning shut-out in the opener, plus smacked three hits to spark the win. In the second outing, the Dawgs ran away with an 11-run third inning for another shut-out, 17-0.

Duane Moore whapped a double with the bases loaded for three RBIs in the Bulldogs' six-run seventh inning on the way to a 16-3 win over Gar-Pal in Garfield April 25. Eight Bulldog hitters combined for 11 hits.

Dayton got some revenge against division leaders Pomeroy with a 13-4 win at Pomeroy April 23, on the heels of a twin-bill sweep by the Pirates the weekend before. Dawg batters hammered in four first-inning runs then added two in the second and third innings to run away with the win. Dayton had 12 hits by seven batters and kept the mistakes low at two.

A defensive highlight was a Colton Steinhoff to Hutchens to Balian Walter relay from center to tag a Pirate baserunner trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Dayton was short handed on April 20 and gave up two games to Pomeroy.
