DAYTON–Navy veteran Bill Carter is home, escorted through Dayton's Main Street last Thursday on his way to his North Touchet Road residence where the ailing former plumber will be under palliative care at home instead of the Portland Veterans Administration hospital.
Supportive Daytonites stepped out of stores and buildings along Main Street and gave Carter's ambulance a flag-waving, patriotic reception. Carter's entourage was led through town and out 4th Street by a Columbia County Sheriff's Office partol car, a Fire District No. 3 engine, Kyle's Towing tow truck, a Columbia County Public Transportation bus, and several accompanying vehicles.
The Vietnam veteran, who once owned and operated BC Plumbing here in Dayton, was diagnosed with lymphoma a short time ago, according to family friend and neighbor Elizabeth Arebalos-Jagelski.
Carter's daughter, Chris Atteberry, resides on the Wolf Fork, and his son, Michael, lives in Kooski, Idaho.
In addition to the stint as a plumber, Carter also was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer in the fisheries, and as a maintenance employee with the Veterans Administration.
