DAYTON–The Columbia County Fair is coming with shows on September 6 and 7; ending with the stock sale on September 8 at 12 p.m.
The Columbia County Fair and Sale is upon us with 87 exhibitors preparing animals for auction. Preliminary numbers show 16 beef, nine lambs, nine goats, and 53 hogs. The auction is in the Columbia County Fairgrounds Sale Barn across from the west grandstand, on Sunday, September 8 at 12 p.m. Please note the time change.
Because of the generous support in the past, many of exhibitors have started college funds and are able to purchase project animals for their next year. This is a worthy cause because it teaches responsibility through feeding, watering, grooming, and bookkeeping. The 4-H and FFA programs also challenge youth in pubic speaking, research, judging, and becoming ambassadors for agriculture.
The sale is a great time to buy meat and fill your freezer while supporting the exhibitors. If you purchase an animal, there are three area butchers who can process meat: Table Rock in Dayton, C&L Locker in Moscow, Idaho, and Blue Valley Meats in Walla Walla. Consider making arrangements with a butcher before the sale. If want to buy an animal, but have not made any arrangements, the sale committee can help.
To purchase an animal as a form of support, but will not keep the meat this method is called "turn" the animal. Please ask a sales committee member how to do this if you have not previously "turned" an animal. Once an animal is turned, it will not be available to purchase unless arrangements have been made prior to the sale. Another way to purchase an animal at auction is to go in with another family member, friend, or business. Just make sure to let the sales committee know in advance.
Another form of support is monetarily. An individual, business, or group may donate money to the Columbia County Youth Livestock Sale at PO Box 274, Dayton, WA 99328, stating the intended exhibitor you wish to support, or state "general support" which will help all exhibitors.
To view the animals before the sale, come to the show Friday morning, September 6 beginning at 8 a.m.
