William Carter

May 4, 1949–August 12, 2024

William "Bill" Carter, 75, of Dayton, passed away on August 12, 2024, at his mountain home.

Bill was born in Walla Walla on May 4, 1949. He was raised in Walla Walla and Grandview and graduated from Grandview High School in 1967. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served two tours in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972 and was awarded a National Defense Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals with two bronze stars.

He returned to Walla Walla and worked at the V.A. Hospital as a Boiler Plant Operator where he met his wife Linda (Romine) Carter. He later accepted a position at the Corps of Engineers as a Mechanical Foreman and managed many dams throughout Washington. He then retired and started B.C. Plumbing and worked as a plumbing contractor for many years in the Walla Walla valley. He and Linda moved to Dayton in 2004 and built their home on the mountain.

Bill was a member of the Walla Walla 59ers, the Walla Walla Wagon Wheelers and served as Wagon master, and volunteer rodeo staff for the Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days for many years. He was also a member of the Columbia County Planning and Building Commission. He was a true craftsman and could build anything from the ground up whether it was a home, a Harley, or a hot rod, he had a gift.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clinton, and Katherine Carter; his uncle and aunt, Alvin, and Donnabelle Fry; his son-in-law, Clint Atteberry; his former wife, Linda Carter; and his former father-in-law, Fritz Voros.

He is survived by his son, Michael Carter of Kooskia, Idaho; his daughter, Christina Atteberry of Dayton; his granddaughter, Jessie Atteberry of Spokane; his sister, Wilma Heaton of Springfield, Ore .; the Juergens family of Patterson, Wash .; Gordon Farley of Dayton; and his former mother-in-law, Rosalie Kilmer of Walla Walla.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wagon Wheelers Clubhouse located at 378 S. Hussey St. in Walla Walla on September 21, 2024 at 1 p.m.

Special thanks to Tom & Elizabeth Jagelski and Juan Arebalos, all the family and friends who visited Bill in his final days, and to Columbia County Transportation, Sheriff's Office and Fire District, Kyle's Towing, and the many Walla Walla and Columbia County citizens who participated in his procession home for the last time.
