DAYTON–The Bulldog eight-man football program gets underway this weekend with a twist: the first game of the season versus Yakama Tribal will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday at the D.H.S. sports complex, moved from the usual Friday Night Lights due to official availability, according to Sam Korslund, athletic director.
"Eleven young men who have stepped up to the challenge of becoming a Bulldog will be put to the test Saturday night with endurance," said second-year Head Coach Lucas Collier. "Honestly, that is my biggest concern, because these young men are very talented, and have the speed and skill set to compete with any one this year."
The team is heavy on sophomores returning from last year's first season as Bulldogs in eight years, now with a season's experience under their helmets. One senior, Duane Moore, is included in the ranks, along with junior Will Durham. The sophomore contingent includes Byron Collier, Silas Czapka, Denver Hutchens, Anthony Jonas, Jordan McCowen and Raymond Yutzy. Three freshmen are Andrew Boggs, Hunter Griffen and Garrott Yost.
Last Friday in Pomeroy, the Dawgs participated in the jamboree, facing Pomeroy, Liberty Christian, DeSales, Garfield-Palouse, Touchet, St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse and Waitsburg. "These young men will be fighting for 48 min each game to represent what they know as the toughest sport in our school," Collier said. "Friday, we put some of our skills to the test and it went very well. We were able to run in a few touchdowns, throw some touch downs and move the ball very well."
"We know this was just a live practice, but we have some work to put in for this upcoming Saturday night game against Yakama Tribal," he said. "We need to secure our blocks, and we will have to be precise on our coverage."
Joining the coaching staff this year is Offensive Coordinator Cody Chapman with returning assistants Jeremy Trump (line) and Assistant Zac Fabian.
