PALOUSE–With both of Dayton's last two Friday Night Lights rescheduled, the two-week break didn't help the Bulldogs as they fell 50-16 to the Gar-Pal Vikings here Monday, Oct. 14.
"Taking two weeks off doesn't help us," commented Head Coach Lucas Collier, who pointed out the Vikings were fired up after defeating Waitsburg last week. Dayton's last game was Sept. 27 versus Waitsburg.
The Bulldogs' Homecoming Game against St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse was cancelled by SJEL due to injury and illness, and rescheduled to Monday, Oct. 21 in Dayton. In lieu of the SJEL game, administration adapted and played two quarters of inter-class flag football, and held the traditional half-time ceremony in which Homecoming Queen Dakotah Griffen and King Duane Moore were announced.
Cancellations and rescheduled games mean the Bulldogs will visit Tekoa-Rosalia this Friday then play the make-up game against SJEL on Monday, Oct. 21 at home, and then face undefeated Pomeroy for Dayton's Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 25.
At Palouse, the Bulldogs won the toss and got "smacked in the mouth," Collier said, marching for touchdowns and a 36-0 lead at half.
The Dawgs regrouped for the second half, Collier said, positioning Will Durham in the back field. "We started playing ball after halftime," Collier said.
Denver Hutchens scored Dayton's first touchdown and caught passes from Jordan McCowen. "We started moving the ball well," the coach said.
McCowen was able to gain yardage on some scrambling plays, scoring Dayton's second touchdown of the night.
"We just can't be a second-half team," Collier said.
