DAYTON–It was the thrill of a lifetime in the fourth quarter of the Dayton versus Pomeroy football game here last Friday.
This reporter happened to be near the Bulldog sideline huddle between quarters and heard Head Coach Lucas Collier point to Dylan Brown and tell him he'd be getting the ball and to find a hole and "run like you've never run before."
Brown is a Dayton Middle School eighth grader who had been called up from Middle School football to bolster Bulldog numbers for the final regular season game, and with the Bulldogs trailing 76-24, substitutions on both sides were being made.
The Bulldogs had just received Pomeroy's kick and started the fourth quarter with a first-and-ten on their own 30. On that first play, Brown got the ball and ripped through a big hole on the right side and soon left Pirate defenders in the dust, scoring six for the Bulldogs.
Amid the fans' cheering, the horn on a car parked near the south end zone honked with gusto.
It was such a moment that Collier turned Brown around and sent him to present the touchdown football to his mother, Renee Brown, who was watching from the family car as health concerns prevent her from negotiating the grandstands at football games.
