Lady Bulldogs wrap season with win

DAYTON–On senior night October 24, Dayton hosted the Waitsburg Cardinals and secured a decisive victory, winning four of five sets, with a loss to highly ranked Oakesdale Tuesday, Oct. 22, in three sets. The Lady Bulldogs finished 4-10 in league, 5-12 overall.

Versus the Lady Cards, Dayton wons 25-19, 25-14, 25-21, 25-12, 14-16, with five sets guaranteed to build experience.

"It was a great team effort," commented Head Coach Des Jones, "with every girl contributing to the success of the night." Jones noted that Senior Night ceremonies acknowledged the hard work seniors Brooklyn Laughery, Peyton Dobbs, Dakotah Griffen and Ellie Gemmell contributed to the program.

Against Waitsburg, Jersey Slack led with total serves of 22, but Peyton Benavides led with 12 aces. "Peyton missed several on the night while trying to perfect her jump serve," Jones said, "and after she got it dialed in, it was a tough serve to receive.

"We limited our errors on serve receive and digs, which allowed us to attack with more accuracy," Jones said.

Layla Booth had 10 assists while Jersey Slack had 7. Peyton Benavides had 13 kills while Alexa Jones had eight.

The Lady Nighthawks, ranked second in the WIAA RPI, remained undefeated at 17-0 with its 17-25, 18-25, 11-25 win over the Lady Dawgs Oct. 22. After losing in 3, they went on to play two more sets for extra playing time, losing 21-25 and winning the 5th set 16-14.

"We put up a tough fight against Oakesdale," Jones said.

Dayton was 82% from the serving line and Brooklyn Laughery led the team with 10 serves and 3 aces.  Peyton Dobbs was 17/20 receiving serves from Oakesdale, and Peyton Benavides had 15 digs.  Layla Booth and Jersey Slack each recorded 6 kills. Alexa Jones played tough at the net with 8 blocks.

"This is probably the best 1B program in the state," Jones said, "and we did our best to make them work for every point. I was very proud of their effort and determination."

Dayton Volleyball will be hosting a Little Girls Clinic Nov. 4-7 after school.
