God wants us to go forward
Very large ships aren't designed to go backwards. They are built as efficiently as possible to go forward, even to the detriment of not being able to easily go backward. Though some ships can go backwards, it takes expert navigating and precise use of the controls. Most require the help of tug boats.
Believers have something in common with big ships. The Lord has designed us to go forward, not backward. He warned us we would face all kinds of obstacles and challenges, yet we are always moving forward, never backward, eager to be faithful and pleasing to Him.
Lot and his family were offered a new life instead of the destruction that would befall their town of Sodom and Gomorrah. The angel told them to not look back as they were offered escape from the fire and brimstone. Lot's wife looked back and was changed to a pillar of salt. She chose to set her attention on her past affections instead of daily discovering the wonderfully new blessings God had in mind for her through His tender mercies, made new every morning.
Paul wrote, "One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" Philippians 3:13-14.
