DAYTON–Three lucky locals got an unexpected phone call from the Dayton Chronicle last Friday, informing them that they were the winners of the three grand prizes from the 46th Annual Holiday Shopping Spree, a Christmas-time promotion that local businesses, in conjunction with this newspaper, have been conducting since 1978.
Seventeen local establishments participated in the 2024 Shopping Spree, which the Chronicle promotes and advertises in the lead up to the Christmas season here. The promotion includes drawing boxes placed at participating businesses in which local shoppers may enter by filling out their name, address and phone number and placing it in the box. Drawn from the hundreds of entries are prizes of $300, $150 and $75 in "shopping scrip," which may be redeemed only at the participating businesses.
Melanie Mings answered her phone and was informed "I'm about to make your day better."
"You are?" she replied.
"Yay! Awesome!" Mings responded when she was informed that her name had been drawn as the $300 Grand Prize. "Thank you! You're kidding me!"
The winner of the $150 scrip prize was Laurie Dillard of Dayton. "Really?" she replied when informed of her good fortune. "Oh, my gosh! Thank you, thank you so much. Oh, my gosh!"
Greg Abramson of Dayton won the $75 scrip drawing. "It's the first time in 15 years I've won something," Abramson responded. Shortly after receiving his prize, he immediately visited one of the local sponsors, Dingle's of Dayton, and made use of his good fortune, with Christmas right around the corner.
Sponsors of the 2024 Shopping spree include Dayton Eagles, VA Tires, The Dayton-Conoci, Vikki's Sweet Shoppe, Elk Drug, All Saints Thrift Store, Clef Hangers Music Studio-Charlotte Baker, Circle K-General Store, My Dad's Place, Dayton Mercantile, Dingle's of Dayton, Dayton Auto Repair, Fiesta en Jalisco, City Lumber, PDQ Food Mart, Dayton Gas and Dayton Chronicle.
