DAYTON–The Bulldogs chalked up eight first-quarter points to trail the Pomeroy Pirates by just four after eight minutes, but the visiting Pirates counted on a trio of treys by Jacob Reisinger, and one each from Braxton McKeirnan and Boone Schmidt to extend the Pomeroy lead and roll to a 51-37 win here December 27.
Dayton is now 4-5 overall, 3-2 in SE 1B league play. The Dawgs faced Riverside Christian last Monday and will host Waitsburg Friday and visit St. John/Endicott-LaCrosse Saturday.
Denver Hutchens and Jordan McCowen paced the Bulldogs with eight points each. Hutchens added six boards, a trio of steals, a pair of blocked shots and an assist while McCowen made three rebounds and assists in the game. Sam Potthoff also wiped down six rebounds, and had two steals and blocked shots.
"We played a really good Pomeroy team that did a good job of executing things against us and scoring," commented Head Coach Clayton Strong. "They slowly extended their lead throughout and did a good job of not letting us have a chance to get back into it."
Pomeroy's big 17-point second quarter contrasted with Dayton's eight points as the Pirates enjoyed a 29-16 lead at the break. They again scored in double digits in the third and fourth stanzas while the Bulldogs managed nine in the third and 12 in the fourth quarter.
Hutchens was scoreless in the first half and added four in each of the remaining quarters. Colton Steinhoff and Sam Potthoff each chipped in a bucket and Raymond Yutzy hit a free throw.
In the fourth quarter, Beau Hazelbaker buried a three, Yutzy got free for a bucket and McCowen hit from the field.
"It was a good test for us to see where we are at and we did some good things and found somethings that we can get better at," Strong said. "It was good to be back on the floor after a few days off for the holiday.
